The message today focused on prayer, but we also celebrated communion, which is where most of the songs today pointed people. It was great to see so much interaction on “The Stand”, with so many people standing “with arms high and hearts abandoned”! We have been using the click regularly for a while now, and it’s great! But, on the two communion songs yesterday, I decided not to start the click at the last minute. I just felt I wanted more freedom with the tempos and flow of the songs during communion. This Sunday was definitely different than most Sundays at Bethel, as you can see from our shortened setlist. We had a guest speaker join us today to speak about the topic of Creation vs. Evolution. We’re actually having a seminar here that started last night and concludes tonight. It’s been very fascinating! But, since he spoke for about 10 minutes longer than our normal message time, we had to make some changes in the service order, resulting in fewer songs. It was still a great morning, with the theme of God’s creation. I’ve been waiting for just the right time to introduce “Beautiful Things” to our congregation, and this seemed to be the perfect time to use it! We followed the message on creation with this song. The lyrics fit perfectly, and it was great challenge for our worship team to work this one up. It’s not your typical worship song, that’s for sure! So much fun to do! It’s been a while since we’ve done this song, but I discovered a different arrangement of this song recently on “Arise: A New Celebration of Worship” and thought it gave it a new energy.
This was the first time doing this song here for us, and people really responded to it! I’m hoping to teach it to people now so we can know it well by Easter. We also added in the loop from Praise Charts for this song, which added a lot!
We tried a whole new order of service today, with the goal of improving the flow of the service. Instead of having the songs at several portions throughout the service, we put all of the songs at the beginning, offering/announcements in the middle and message at the end. I loved the longer worship set (the music portion) at the start, and it seemed to really help people stay connected with what was going on rather than having to start over each time we start to sing. But, I also introduced a modern hymn written by the Gettys that fit perfectly as well. “By Faith” is a great hymn that speaks about living a life of faith, and how God has provided in the past for His people of faith. This was quite an eventful morning! Ever have one of those mornings where almost nothing goes as planned, yet somehow it all works out? Well we experienced that this morning. This set list above didn’t happen in either service, although it was the plan. We had four very beautiful baby dedications in each service, and instead of the eight minutes we had planned, it turned out to be closer to 15. So, needless to say we adjusted our service accordingly, and cut a song in each service. How do you handle things like baby dedications in your services? Everyone did a great job today, though! We had the worship choir sing along with the team and band, so the energy level was very high! “Great I Am” is such a powerful song! If you haven’t tried this one yet, you need to at least listen to it. We had Jared Anderson at our church last October, and ever since then our church has embraced this song as a vehicle to just bask in the greatness and power of God. “You Are Good” was a newer song for us this morning – a great new upbeat song of praise from Bethel Live. We had a great morning at Bethel, and one of the coolest things was the band today was made up primarily of high school students! They all did a super job! We introduced “Like An Avalance” today for the first time as a special before communion. Bekah and Sheri did super! We had quite a bit of trouble with our camera system today, which was unfortunate. I think we have everything worked out, so we should be good for next week, but we only were able to broadcast 1 service today, instead of all of them. This was the first day that WorshipStream had added the chat feature to our streaming, so I was looking forward to seeing how that worked. We started with two great songs about the name of Jesus with “Matchless” and “At Your Name”. We used the click track from Praise Charts for “More Than Amazing”, which added a lot of great sounds and helped to fill it out and keep us from rushing. There were a few cymbal crashes on the loop, though, that Christine didn’t play on the drums, which was a bit strange.
I had asked Zack to play an offertory on the guitar this week, and as the week went on, it evolved into him doing the song “Divine Romance” by Phil Wickham, which turned out great!! Zack played acoustic, with drums, bass guitar and accordion (on my keyboard). He did a super job!
Closing out the service after the message, we used “I Will Follow” by Chris Tomlin. The 9:30 service went great, but at the 11:00, I forgot to change the keyboard from accordion back to piano, so needless to say, we had a very interesting start to “I Will Follow” in that service! I tried to casually joke about it, and we re-started the song, and all was well. Some of the team, though, thought I should have kept it!

This morning, we finished up our series about loving others like Jesus loves us. It’s been a great reminder from Pastor Tim about being a church of love. Since today was the culmination of the series, I included songs that really challenged people in this area. I’ve been waiting for just the right time to use “By Our Love” by Christy Nockels, and this seemed to be the perfect time to use it. Sheri did a fabulous job on the solo, and I accompanied her on piano; no band on this one, just voice and piano. It’s nice to do that once in a while.
Using click tracks/loops is getting much more comfortable. We’re using primarily the click tracks from Praise Charts, since that’s where we get the majority of music. It’s great how everything matches up! Today, our second keyboard player was gone, so I noticed how much the loop fills in with the organ/strings sounds, especially on “I Will Follow” and “Hosanna”. Ableton Live is great, I have to say! It’s become such a useful tool in this area! Once I discovered that I could change the tempo of a click, even ones with loops and still hold the tuning, that was a game changer. Now we can find the perfect tempo for each song (which is critical!!), and match the click/loop to that, instead of trying to play a song slower than we normally do. I led in the Cafe today, with the same songs as in the Contemporary. The team did great today! We weren’t sure if Brenda would be able to sing, since she hardly had a voice when she came in this morning, but God is good, and her voice held out for the morning. I have to get a separate keyboard, though, for the Cafe! Right now, we need to carry our (fairly large – 88 key) Yamaha S90 ES back and forth from our Family Life Center to our sanctuary each time I lead in the Cafe; both Thursday night and Sunday. That’s a lot of back and forth! Can anyone recommend a nice keyboard to use? I’m looking for one that’ fairly simple, nothing fancy with good keyboard sounds – piano, organ, strings, pads. I was actually on vacation yesterday, at my parent’s home in Minnesota. We had a great week spent with family and friends. We celebrated my 40th birthday, my dad’s 88th birthday, and my daughter’s 8th birthday. That’s quite a span! From everything I’ve heard, the team back here at Bethel did a great job leading yesterday. Thanks, Marv, for leading the team, and everyone else for a great job well done! I’ve come to expect it now, but just before this service started, around 7:30 a.m., I received a text message saying something was wrong, please call. Why is it that things seem to fail only when I’m on vacation? It’s usually something simple that I normally just take care of myself. I’ve told myself each time this happens that I need to do a better job of training people what to do about the “what if”s. What do I do if this happens, or that happens… I really don’t mind getting the calls/texts, but everyone really should know what to do if something like that happens. I’d like to say everything went great this morning, but we definitely had our mishaps today! The band and singers did a great job, but right from the beginning I felt like I was off the mark. First, I messed up the order of service when I started the service with our first song, instead of letting the other pastor start with the welcome, sending the other pastors scrambling to readjust the service order on the fly. “God is With Us Now” and “Always” went fine, both great songs!
We have been experimenting with click tracks, and we had a couple that we were going to try today. Most of the click tracks/loops I’ve been using have come from Praise Charts, so the click/loop goes exactly with their arrangements, which works great since the majority of our lead sheets come from there. It has definitely been a learning experience! I guess we need days like this to help us learn from our mistakes. During “The Power of the Cross”, I missed a couple of beats in the turnaround back to verse 2 (those dreadful 2/4 measures!), so we were off by two beats from the loop. I stopped the click in the middle of the song, but only after fumbling around trying to move the cursor with the trackpad on my laptop over to the right button. I discovered only after the service that pressing the space bar does the same thing. We finished the song fine, but I’ sure it was very distracting. In the next service I thought for sure we would conquer it – no problem! Well, during that same song in the next service, the battery died in my in-ear pack, so I lost the click and everything else! I had to whip out the earbuds, stop the click and play the rest with just the house sound. To top it off, when I listened back to the recording of the live-stream, to my horror, I heard the click coming through the live stream! Whoops! Wow – what else could go wrong! It’s really too bad, too, because that was the first time we’ve done that song here, and I was really looking forward to it. Both times today, there were issues.
So, a lot of mistakes today, but I sure learned a lot, and won’t repeat any of them (hopefully…)! As I told the team as we prayed for the second service, “We’ve had smoother…”, but also how good it is know that eve when we mess up, God can still use us! Who knows how God chose to use my bad day to bless someone else! The team did a great job this morning on the songs, including the new one we introduced – “Victory”, from the new Gateway Worship album. You can see the Planning Center details and also watch the video of this service.
“Here For You” (Matt Maher, Matt Redman, Jesse Reeves, and Tim Wanstall)
– This is a new song from the Passion album by the same name. I liked starting the service with this song. We often start with a high-energy, upbeat song, so this was a change of pace. This song was a great way to get our hearts set to worship, and a great reminder of why we were there. Just like the last time we did this one, the Pre-Chorus line was in my head all week – “To You our hearts are open, nothing here is hidden, You are our one desire.”
“Awesome Is the Lord Most High” (Chris Tomlin, Jesse Reeves, Jon Abel, Cary Pierce)
– This is one our church’s favorites! Everyone knows it so well, and it’s so great to hear everyone singing out and hands raised!
“Stronger” (Ben Fielding and Reuben Morgan)
– This is one of the songs I wanted to do last week at Easter, but couldn’t fit it in. So we just extended our Easter celebration one more week! What a powerful song! It also was a good lead-in to the theme for today with the line “sin is broken”.
“Victory” (Cody Carnes)
– This was a new song that we introduced today. As I was preparing for this service, I was led to include this song, but had no idea what a good fit it would be with Pastor Tim’s sermon. Before we did this, I read Romans 6:6-7 to lead in to it. We had originally planned to do this song as a special during the offering, and then end the service after the message with “Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)”. But, as I was sitting in the first service, I just felt led to end the service with this song, since the words to the songs would be so good for the congregation to sing as a response to the message! We ended up doing the song in both places, before and after the message. The first time I invite people just to listen, but after the message, people were really singing out!
