A Steward of Technology

This week I’m privileged to be a part of the National Worship Leader Conference in Kansas City, KS, put on by Worship Leader Magazine. The week kicked off with a pre-conference seminar on the topic of “Stewards of Technology in the Service of Worship”. It really was a very interesting 4 hours, filled not just with a boatload of practical tips, resources and ideas, but also a challenge to really think about the whys in what we do with technology.

The seminar was led by Chuck Fromm, Publisher of Worship Leader magazine, DJ Chaung, Network Developer at WL Magazine and other guests, including Dr. Mark D. Roberts and our very own Ben Abu Saada, co-host of the All About Worship Podcast.

There were so many great thoughts that came out of this, but I thought I would just share a few.  Dr. Roberts asked the question “How do I exercise my stewardship of technology in a worshiping community”.  He really challenged us to focus on three main areas of our job as a tech steward.  We are to think critically, biblically, and spiritually about each new technology we would like to add. Technology is both good and bad, Roberts said.  We’re also to ask questions, such as why are we doing this, what are the benefits, and other theological and psychological questions in regards to how we should be involved. Finally, we’re to pray about how God would want us to use technology in worship.  It  was a good reminder that just because we can, doesn’t mean we should, in every circumstance.

Both Dr. Roberts and Chuck Fromm did a great job of helping us look critically at the use of technology in worship. It’s so easy to just add this new feature, or add this new avenue of communication, just because it’s out there, and the latest thing. While it may be a good thing, is it really helping us do a better job of being the Body of Christ, or is it just cool?

DJ Chaung is the network developer at Worship Leader Magazine, and he gave us some very practical ideas on how we can use technology in a worship setting.  He gave a great presentation, and wanted everyone to make sure to know that his presentation is available at the website for this event,  which is http://www.techsteward.net/ You can actually find the slides and presentations for all the speakers from this morning’s event at this site. You should definitely check it out!!

DJ explained how he defines a tech steward,  and after hearing his explanation, I think a lot of us might identify ourselves as one! A Tech Steward is involved in four different areas in the church: researching, selecting which social media tool to use for your church, coordinating and training.  Researching involves knowing your community, knowing technology, and knowing the Bible. He said that we need to research and know our own community because every community has a way of communicating that will work best with them. We can’t assume that just because Facebook works with one church, it will work in every church. He also said a tech steward should be resourceful, trustworthy, optimistic and open to new concepts.

Ben Abu Saada at the National Worship Leader Conference

Following that, the morning ended with a panel discussion with all the speakers. Ben Abu Saada joined the panel and fielded some questions from the audience (even ones sent in via text message or Twitter during the workshop, of course…)  Ben did a great job, and explained what tools his church uses to reach his community.

I would really encourage you to check out the Tech Steward website for all the notes from today’s workshop. I’d also love to hear your comments on this topic. Let’s share ideas of how you use technology in your churches!

On the eve of the National Worship Leader Conference

Well, we’re here in Kansas City for the National Worship Leader Conference, which starts tomorrow. Today was our travel day. We left Janesville at 7:30 a.m. for the long road trip. We stopped in Rockford to pick up someone else.  The road trip was long, but not unbearable.  We had 3 drivers this year, which helped a lot.

When we got to Kansas City, we quickly checked in and headed over to Jack Stack’s BBQ for a wonderful meal! I had heard so much about it, and it did not disappoint!

Tomorrow we start the conference! We have a group of 11 people from our church attending the conference this year, and I’m so excited for everyone to experience it!

I’m attending the Pre-Conference Seminar tomorrow about how to be a Tech Steward (stewarding technology in the church). After that we have our rehearsal for the conference choir with Stan Endicott. I can’t wait for that! We sing tomorrow night with Keith and Kristyn Getty, which should be fun!

I’ll try to give daily updates as we go. But for now, goodnight!

One Sonic Society at the National Worship Leader Conference

We are going to see so many wonderfully talented artists next week at the National Worship Leader Conference in Kansas City. But, one of the groups that I’m really looking forward to hearing is One Sonic Society. Here’s a short video from the group inviting you to the conference.

Sunday Recap – July 11, 2010

We had a great morning at Bethel today; very busy, but it was all good! We have had a youth group from a church in Costa Rica with us here at Bethel all this past week. They have worked with our youth group to do service projects around Janesville, as well as spend some quality time in fellowship and worship. It’s really been a great week! Their team was involved with our service this morning in both testimony and music.

I was leading in our Traditional Service this morning, so I wasn’t involved in the Cafe Connections service, but the team in there did a great job! It’s so cool to be able to have other worship leaders we can draw on. Thanks, Adam! We have been having a few technical glitches in the Cafe the past couple of weeks. When we show the feed from the sanctuary in the Cafe (video/audio), there’s a hum or buzz that comes with it. It’s not on the other channels, just that one. So, I’m thinking maybe it’s a grounding issue. It’s a brand new system, so there shouldn’t be any issues, right!?

You can watch the video from our services this morning here. This post is part of the Sunday Setlist blog, where you can read other recaps from around the country. I’ll be off the next two Sundays as I take a group of 11 from our worship ministry down to Kansas City for the National Worship Leaders Cofnerence! I can’t wait! Maybe I’ll see you there!

Contemporary Services
“Today Is The Day” (Lincoln Brewster, Paul Baloche)

“Revelation Song” (Jennie Lee Riddle)
– This is one of our favorite songs from the past few years, and it was especially sweet today! As I mentioned earlier, we have had a team from Costa Rica with us all week, and one of the girls from their team sang with us today in the worship choir.  I asked her to sing a solo on one of the verses, and I had our choir learn the chorus of this song in Spanish.  At the end we sang the chorus with both Spanish and English together. It was so cool to hear the two languages used in worship! The whole Costa Rica team was there today, and I hope our arrangement of this song made it feel a bit like home. I was reminded how what we experienced today is just a taste of what heaven will be like – every tribe and tongue gathered around the throne singing “Holy, holy holy is the Lord God Almighty”!!

“How He Loves” (John Mark McMillan)
– We finally got around to using this song today! This is another one of my favorites right now, and I’ve been wanting to use it, and today seemed like the best time to introduce it with the choir here. During our rehearsal on Thursday, we watched the video that John Mark McMillan put out where he explains the background of the song.  As if the song itself isn’t powerful enough, the video really inspired the choir as we led it today.

“God of This City” (Bluetree)

Cafe Connections
“Famous One” (Chris Tomlin and Jesse Reeves)

“Nothing But the Blood” (Matt Redman)

“You Never Let Go” (Matt and Beth Redman)

“Shine” (Matt Redman)

Traditional Worship Service
“Holy God, We Praise Thy Name”
“Our Great Savior”
“Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah”
“Day By Day”
“He Giveth More Grace”

“A Beautiful Exchange” by Hillsong – a review

I always wait with great anticipation for the next release from Hillsong Live, hoping to find at least a few gems that I can use with our teams at church. After listening to their latest release, “A Beautiful Exchange”, I’m glad to say that I was not disappointed, and there are several songs that I can’t wait to incorporate at church. Beyond that, as I sat and listened to the entire project from beginning to end with just me and my headphones, I was ushered into a time of worship right there in my living room.  Thank you Hillsong, once again, for giving us such great tools to use in the church to lift His name on high!

Here is the complete track number, title and songwriter list:

1. “Our God Is Love” (Joel Houston, Scott Ligertwood)
2. “Open My Eyes” (Reuben Morgan, Braden Lang)
3. “Forever Reign” (Reuben Morgan, Jason Ingram)
4. “The One Who Saves” (Ben Fielding)
5. “Like Incense/Sometimes By Step” (Brooke Ligertwood, Rich Mullins, David Strasser)
6. “Greatness Of Our God” (Reuben Morgan, Jason Ingram, Stu Garrard)
7. “The Father’s Heart” (Gio Galanti, Jorim Kelly)
8. “You” (Joel Houston)
9. “Love Like Fire” (Matt Crocker)
10. “Believe” (Reuben Morgan, Darlene Zschech)
11. “Beautiful Exchange” (Joel Houston)
12. “Thank You” (Ben Fielding, Reuben Morgan)
13. “Forever Reign (Radio Version)” (Reuben Morgan, Jason Ingram)

The album opens with “Our God is Love”, a great call to worship written by Joel Houston, who was featured recently on an All About Worship podcast, and “Open My Eyes”, an upbeat, vertical prayer for God to open our eyes and let us see all the wonders and power of His name.

Then comes my favorite track of the entire project, “Forever Reign”, a soaring anthem of praise.  While the verses declare who God is: “You are good, You are good, when there’s nothing good in me…”, the chorus is vertical: “Oh, I’m running to Your arms, the riches of Your love will always be enough”.  You may already be familiar with this song, though, as it was recently released by One Sonic Society on their 5 track EP.  Reuben Morgan teamed up with Jason Ingram, a member of OSS, to co-write this song (along with “The Greatness of Our God”, another title on this CD).

You can watch and listen to “Forever Reign” below:

This CD was not without its surprises. As I was listening to “Like Incense/Sometimes By Step”, all of a sudden I said – hey, I know that song! This song takes the very familiar chorus “Sometimes By Step” by Rich Mullins and pairs it with some rich new verses by Brooke Ligertwood. There’s the other surprise – as I was listening to this song, I was sure I heard Brooke Fraser’s distinct, beautiful voice, but the credits said Brooke Ligertwood. Now I was confused… Until I did a bit of research and discovered that Brooke married Hillsong member Scott Ligertwood recently and has changed her name.  Needless to say, regardless of her name, Brooke has done a wonderful job pairing these two songs into a seamless flow, and has once again brought this powerful anthem for the church to a whole new generation.

Other songs that are on my shortlist include “Love Like Fire”, a song of surrender to God’s love; “A Beautiful Exchange”, a story of salvation; and “Thank You”, thinking ahead to Thanksgiving. Those are just a few standouts for me, but the entire album is filled with great songs for the church to sing. If you’re a fan of Hillsong, then you’ll definitely want to make sure to add this CD to your collection!

Sunday Recap – July 4th, 2010

I don’t remember the last time the 4th of July has been on a Sunday. I guess I’d have to do some research to find that out… But, it was a day to celebrate our freedom – in our country, but more importantly the freedom we have in Christ.  To celebrate the 4th, we used the 4th of July countdown from Flickering Mind Media, followed by a mini-movie, “Finding Freedom” by Centerline New Media.

This post is part of the Sunday Setlists blog. You can also see the video of our service from today here.

Contemporary Worship Service
“Where the Spirit of the Lord Is” (Christy Nockels, Chris Tomlin, Nathan Nockels)
– I thought this would be a good fit with our freedom theme this morning. This was the 3rd time we’ve done this song, and people finally started to respond with this one today.
“Glorious One” (Steve Fee)
“Follow You” (Leeland)
– This is one of my favorite songs right now, and it fit our theme of living a life fully committed to Him.  One of our younger worship leaders, Zack Burtness, led vocally on this song, and he did a great job!
“The Wonderful Cross” (Tomlin)
“Beautiful the Blood” (Steve Fee and Louie Giglio)
– This was a new one for us today. What a great song for communion! The words fit so well as we took the cup together.

Cafe Connection Video Cafe service
This was the 4th week of our new video cafe service, and it’s going great! I wasn’t in there at all this morning since I was leading in the other service at that time. We had a few technical glitches this morning, which was too bad, considering we had our biggest crowd since we’ve started.  Once we got those resolved, things went great. Nathan Nymeyer, our interim youth pastor was the worship leader this morning, and he did a great job! Here’s the songs he chose:

“Hosanna” (Paul Baloche)
“Your Grace Is Enough” (Matt Maher)
“Mighty Is the Power of the Cross” (Chris Tomlin)
“The Wonderful Cross” (Tomlin)

Traditional Worship Service
“The Star-Spangled Banner” – We sang both verses of this song today at the start of our service. I had actually never heard the words to the second verse, but they were very appropriate for our service:
“America The Beautiful”
“Battle Hymn of the Republic”
“O How He Loves You and Me”
“The Old Rugged Cross”

“Star-Spangled Banner” – Verse 3

Oh thus be it ever when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes
And the war’s desolation
Blest with vict’ry and peace
May the heav’n rescued land
Praise the Pow’r that hath made
And preserved us a nation
Then conquer we must when our cause it is just
And this be our motto in God is our trust
And the star-spangled banner
In triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave

Sunday Recap – June 27, 2010

By God’s grace, things went very well this morning at Bethel, and our teams did a great job!!

Cafe Connection
This was the third week of our new coffeehouse-style cafe video venue service. Today was the first day that I led worship in the service and I really leading in there.  There’s been a great response to this new service! We have a smaller, acoustic worship team lead worship, and then the message is sent to our Cafe from the sanctuary live via video feed. Our cafe includes bagels with cream cheese, coffee and juice.

Songs
“Meet With Me” (Lamont Hiebert)
– I pulled this one out of the drawer after a long time of not using it, but it’s a great song! We did the version by Ten Shekel Shirt.
“Glory To God Forever” (Steve Fee and Vicky Beeching)
– Since the Cafe is more of an acoustic setting, I would say our version was more in line with Vicky Beeching’s version on her new CD than Fee’s version. It was a nice change of pace for this song. Great both ways!

“Everlasting God” (Brenton Brown)
“God of Wonders” (Marc Byrd and Steve Hindalong)
– Today was also a first for one of our young worship leaders, Zack.  I asked him to lead this song, and eventually by the end of the summer he’ll be leading a whole service in the Cafe. Way to go, Zack!

“Blessed Be Your Name” (Matt and Beth Redman)

Contemporary Services
It was kind of a tight squeeze to make it to this service after leading in the Cafe this morning, since I had to haul my keyboard from one room to another and get it set up, but we made it! The congregation was very responsive today in worship, which always is nice to see! With our new camera system installed now, we are also streaming our services live online. You can actually watch this service here. I have to apologize for the audio on the LiveStream. We’re still  working out the details on some of this stuff, and the mix is not the greatest on the video. It wasn’t that way in the house. Sorry…

Songs
“Meet With Me” (Lamont Hiebert)

“Everlasting God” (Brenton Brown)
“You Alone Can Rescue” (Matt Redman and Jonas Myrin)

“Your Love Never Fails” (Chris McClarney and Anthony Skinner)
– We introduced this song for the first time today during the offering. We did it in F, which is quite a bit lower than the original on the Jesus Culture CD, but it works well for congregational singing. What a great song!

“I Have A Hope” (Tommy Walker)
– Tommy Walker is one of my favorite song-writers, and this song was a great way to end the service.

Traditional Service
At the same time as our Cafe service at 8:00 am, we also have a Traditional Service in the sanctuary with hymns, organ and piano.  I usually lead this service, but now since the Cafe has started, I haven’t been in there the past few weeks, but we’ve had some great leaders step up and take the lead in this service, both up front and on the piano. You can watch this service here.

Songs
“Rejoice the Lord Is King”
“Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God Almighty”
“Redeemed”
“He Hideth My Soul”
“Open My Eyes That I May See”
“What A Friend We Have In Jesus”

This recap is part of the Sunday Setlist site, where each week, worship leaders from around the country share their setlists and service details.  Check it out! Thanks!

Gungor

Today I’ve been listening to the new “Beautiful Things” CD by Gungor (formerly known as The Michael Gungor Band”). If you haven’t heard it, you have to give it a listen!! It’s fresh, unique, creative, and I love the use of alternative instruments and sounds.  It’s filled with rich lyrics and passionate music. A few of the standout tracks for me are “Beautiful Things” and “The Earth Is Yours”.   You can check it out on iTunes here.`

Here are a couple of videos that will give you a feel for the group:

Enjoy!!
